Wild crossing from Valence to Montélimar – Guided tour

Exploring the Ardèche by road bike means embracing the slower pace, leaving the main roads behind, and venturing into a raw, diverse, and remarkably preserved landscape. This self-guided tour, conceived by Projet KM0, connects Valence to Montélimar in seven days, traversing the most beautiful Ardèche scenery exclusively along quiet, secluded country roads.

From the deep green of the Eyrieux valley to the wide horizons of the Ardèche plateau, from stone villages to Cévennes forests, this journey is a total immersion in a wild Ardèche, far from mass tourism.

A week of cycling, a true journey across the territory

Each day's stage ranges from 60 to 120 km, designed to offer a balance between the pleasure of riding, exploration, and controlled effort. The route prioritizes comfort, smooth riding, and scenic beauty, while maintaining a genuine sporting dimension.

Day 1 — From Valence to the Eyrieux Valley

From the very first kilometers, you quickly leave the Rhône Valley behind and enter a more intimate part of the Ardèche. The Eyrieux Valley offers an ideal warm-up: gentle roads, an ever-present river, cliffs, and villages nestled along the water's edge. It's the first taste of the rhythm of touring, alternating between contemplative pauses and the sheer pleasure of riding.

Day 2 — Heading towards the Haut-Vivarais

The road climbs gradually. The landscapes change, chestnut groves give way to deep forests, and the roads empty out. The climbs are long and steady, ideal for finding your rhythm. Upon reaching the highlands of the Haut-Vivarais, the air cools, silence settles in: the inland Ardèche is revealed.

Day 3 — Towards the wide open spaces of Lachamp-Raphaël

This day marks our entry into the highest and wildest part of the Ardèche. Mountain roads unfold one after another, panoramas open up, and the horizon stretches out. Lachamp-Raphaël, perched on the plateau, perfectly embodies this rugged and magnificent Ardèche. Here, the light is raw, the landscapes vast, and the feeling of being at the ends of the earth is very real.

Day 4 — Descent to Vals-les-Bains

The mountains gradually give way to the Ardèche valleys. The descents are long and exhilarating, the roads winding between stone villages and steep-sided valleys. Arriving in Vals-les-Bains offers a welcome respite: a thermal atmosphere, mild climate, and ideal recovery after several days at altitude.

Day 5 — From the heart of the Ardèche to the Larnas plateau

The landscape changes again. The Ardèche becomes drier, more mineral, brighter. We pass through charming villages and along plateau roads with sweeping views before reaching Larnas. Here, the calm is absolute. The sky seems immense, the horizon wide open. A night on the Ardèche plateau, outside of time.

Day 6 — Signature stage towards the Ardèche Cévennes

This is one of the most memorable days of the trip. After the Vans area, the road plunges into increasingly wild terrain. Deep forests, isolated roads, a powerful Cévennes atmosphere. Passing through Laval-d'Aurelle gives a real sense of being at the ends of the earth, before taking the legendary road between Laval-d'Aurelle and Pied-de-Borne: narrow, wooded, spectacular. An intense, deeply immersive stage.

Day 7 — Return to Montélimar

The final major crossing. We enjoy the inland roads one last time, far from the busy gorges. The panoramas widen, the landscape gradually softens. Arriving in Montélimar brings the crossing to a gentle close, with simple and efficient train arrangements for the return journey.

The major key stages of the journey

✔ Eyrieux Valley: gentle landscapes, river, green roads
✔ Haut-Vivarais & Monts d'Ardèche: mountain atmosphere and deep forests
✔ Ardèche plateau & Issarlès lake area: volcanic landscapes and wide open spaces
✔ Hidden southern Ardèche: stone villages, forgotten roads
✔ Complete crossing of the Larnas plateau: silence, horizon, total freedom
